Australia: Mandatory information – SMS Sender ID changes from 1 July 2026

Written by George Bardissi | Jun 30, 2026 2:18:27 PM

From 1 July 2026, the SMS Sender ID Register will be introduced to help reduce SMS impersonation scams.

The Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) has provided the following information under the Telecommunications (SMS Sender ID Register) Industry Standard 2025.

What's changing

From 1 July 2026, businesses using alphanumeric SMS Sender IDs will need to comply with requirements set by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

A Sender ID is the name that appears at the top of an SMS message, identifying who the message is from (for example, “ATO”, or “AusPost”).

Businesses will need to register their Sender IDs to ensure messages can be verified and recognised as legitimate. Unregistered Sender IDs will be marked as “Unverified” or blocked.

Numeric Sender IDs (such as virtual mobile numbers or long numbers) will not be impacted.

What you need to do

• Register your Sender IDs via ACMA Assist before 1 July 2026.

• Allow up to 7 days for processing

• Refer to the SMS Sender ID Register: User guide for telcos for further information

Only organisations with an Australian Business Number (ABN) can apply. If you do not have an ABN, you will need to partner with a local Certified Telco.

We recommend registering as soon as possible to allow time for approval.
